Short Story Serries:
Collision in the Snow
I sat at my window and watched the crisp blue sky filled with gorgeous white clouds. I was dazzled by something so simple and yet so beautiful. I could watch these clouds drift, gently across the sky for hours. I was about to nestle peacefully to sleep when my sister shouted eagerly “it’s snowing, it’s snowing!” at the top of her voice. “What” I murmured before drifting back to sleep. “It’s snowing” she shouted in my face. I immediately turned around to see a soft white blanket of snow. I was shocked and startled but at the same time ecstatic.
I raced downstairs whipping my boots on as fast as I could. “Yay, yay” my sister joined in hopping around from one foot to another. I put on my big red coat and my soft spotty bobble-hat, strapped o shiny black boots and zoomed out the back door. I could hear the loud crunch it made as I plodded through this maze of snow. As I put my finger against the cold, icy snow my finger went numb with frost bite. I decided first that I would make a snow angel, so I spread out on the blanket of snow and moved my arms and legs backwards and forwards repeatedly, and sure enough the perfect snow angel appeared. My sister did the same thing only it came out all childish and wonky. We didn’t have time to do anything else because our dad was going to take us sledging with our brand new sledges. Mine had a shiny metal bar across the front and it was painted bright red with my name on it. I couldn’t wait to try it out. My sister’s sledge was covered with a massive butterfly with huge glittering wings. It was very pink and girly. I rushed into the car just before my sister, I quickly tried to put on my seatbelt but my sister distracted me and made the buckle fly into my face making my cheek sore. I sat back in my chair angrily with my sore cheek pressed right up against freezing glass. I was longing desperately to whiz my brand new sledge down the great white mountain. I looked up and saw the heaps upon heaps of giant snowflakes come pouring down from the sky like bombs in a battle. “Are we there yet?” my sister asked annoyingly. “No” I mumbled crossly.
it felt like the journey was going to take forever when suddenly we were all jerking. We were skidding rapidly on the icy road. Our engine got clogged with snow and we couldn’t use the brakes. Our car was spinning round in circles and we couldn’t stop it. My heart was racing out of my chest. My stomach was churning and I felt like I was going to be sick. The hairs on the back of my neck stood on end, My head was being shaken violently and my ears had a horrible ache. Suddenly I heard a large thud and everything blacked out.
For a long time everything was black, and I didn’t remember anything from earlier. My head was no longer spinning and I could just make out my dad and my sister looming above me. My dad held out his hand and I quickly scrambled to my feet. I could see another figure. He was tall and chunky. He had long grey wispy hair, a grizzly beard and a grumpy look on his face. He shouted curses at my dad. I stood there in awe as I watched my dad being yelled at. The man also appeared to have a large bruise on his forehead. I asked him what his name was and he just scowled at me and carried on cursing at my dad. Then the man said “You’re lucky to be alive kid!” and left scowling at three of us.
It felt like there was a whirlpool of emotions going on inside my head, I was sad and upset yet also excited and relieved, I couldn’t really tell what was going to happen next. We exchanged glances, knowing the worst was over, and as we trudged off over the snowy hills into the distance I didn’t look back for I was glad this surprising ordeal was finally over.
